Folly: Cabin in Joshua Tree
Designed to provide a truly special travel experience, the Folly Cabin encourages guests to disconnect and immerse into off-grid living.
An unconventional escape
Folly is a two cabin rental set located in the Southern California desert, on a barren sun-drenched site of Joshua Tree.
Malek Alqadi (architect and designer) and his partner Hillary Flur of Los Angeles-based architecture and design firm Cohesion Studio, also founders of The Folly Collection, reimagined an abandoned homestead built in 1954 as “Folly”.
Completed in 2017, Folly is a small off-grid space offering a great experience, modern and innovative, while grounded within its environment. Folly consists of two structures of different surface wrapped in salvaged rusty steel and featuring gabled roofs, looking like a pair of abandoned sheds, forgotten by time among the Joshua Tree landscape. The master cabin with a modest area of 43 m2, compact but spacious and airy, offers an open-space with a living room with a sofa bed, a dining area, a fitted kitchen, a bathroom with a shower with a picture window looking out onto the desert landscape, and a sleeping mezzanine within its compact shell. The other cabin named Stargazing has an exterior ladder leading to a bedroom with a semi-open roof and bio-ethanol fireplace, offering pristine views of the night sky and allowing guests to experience the cosmos from a heated queen bed. There is also a projector for watching a movie under the starry sky. The stylish, minimalist and luxurious interiors are clad in raw light-colored plywood, combined with concrete, natural stone, dark furniture, weathered metal, and warm wood accents. The two structures are separated by a wooden deck equipped with a rain shower and an outdoor soaking tub made from a galvanized metal tank, most commonly used elsewhere to water livestock. There is also a barbecue and a fire pit. Although Folly is an isolated cabin, it is perfectly functional, full of technology, and having all modern comforts as well as wifi.
The perfect place for simple indoor-outdoor living that focuses on the surroundings.
