The Chacuel is a private rental home set on a remarkable 7.5-acre plot at the edge of Yucca Mesa, in the Joshua Tree desert in the United States. Tucked away at the end of a dirt road, the property sits on the edge of a mesa cliff, overlooking Pipes Canyon Wash — a protected nature reserve of thousands of Joshua Trees, offering a view unlike anywhere else in Yucca Valley. The Chacuel is the creation of Mila Morris, designer and founder of the project, whose vision blends architecture, natural textures, and clean, contemporary lines with a strong focus on materiality and atmosphere. Renovated, reimagined, and completed at the end of 2020, the house can accommodate up to six guests. The property is composed of two distinct volumes: the main house and a separate guest house. Together, they feature a living room, kitchen, three bedrooms, and three bathrooms, including two indoor showers finished in Moroccan tadelakt and an outdoor shower in high-end terrazzo. Outside, a saltwater pool and hot tub complete the experience. Stripped back to its structure and entirely redesigned, the house opens through expansive frameless glass panels that flood the interiors with natural light and extend onto a large patio deck facing the untouched desert landscape. A shaded pergola and generous outdoor living spaces invite long, quiet moments immersed in the scenery. Inside, natural materials, neutral desert tones, and bespoke design elements define a calm and refined atmosphere. The house is equipped with central air conditioning and heating, as well as a 10-foot indoor projector screen, while its thoughtful architecture ensures a naturally comfortable climate throughout most of the year. Surrounded by pristine wilderness, The Chacuel offers a rare sense of isolation and stillness — a place to observe wildlife, witness extraordinary sunsets, and, at night, gaze at the Milky Way in complete clarity. Created as a sanctuary away from the intensity of daily life, The Chacuel is an invitation to slow down, reconnect with nature, and find inspiration in simplicity.
