Babel Tulum: A Boho-Chic Sanctuary in the Heart of the Mexican Jungle

Nestled on the edge of Tulum, Babel Tulum blends harmoniously into an untouched natural setting. The complex is designed to minimize its environmental footprint, encouraging the regeneration of native vegetation and offering visitors an immersive experience within the tropical landscape. The structures rise around an elliptical courtyard, creating a fluid interaction between built spaces and the surrounding scenery.

Designed by renowned architecture firm V Taller, Babel Tulum draws inspiration from the mythical Tower of Babel, symbolizing cultural unity and the pursuit of transcendence. The project offers a contemplative space that adapts to climate and economic shifts while honoring the ecological integrity of the site. Its design incorporates elements from traditional hammam architecture, encouraging introspection and a deep connection with natural elements.

At the heart of the complex stands a cylindrical tower, positioned at the geometric center of the eye-shaped masterplan. This central structure, influenced by ancestral hammams, uses filtered natural light and tactile materials to create a calming, sacred ambiance. Light tunnels, vaulted thresholds, and layered tropical vegetation guide guests through the space, crafting a multi-sensory journey. A circular pool at the base of the tower supports passive cooling, while bioclimatic strategies enhance thermal performance without mechanical systems.

The complex features 59 residential units, designed to accommodate diverse types of stays and lifestyles. Interiors are crafted using natural materials like tropical wood, clay vessels, and white linen textiles, reinforcing the project’s artisanal and contextual sensibility. Each unit offers a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting residents to live in harmony with the surrounding environment.

The overall design fosters a holistic experience, where architecture, nature, and well-being come together to create a rejuvenating retreat. Babel Tulum includes a hammam on the ground floor of the central tower, accommodating up to 16 people, as well as a jacuzzi with panoramic views over the canopy. A spa area offers massages and hot and cold baths, while a yoga shala hosts sessions of yoga and meditation.
