Boutique Hotel Badhaus: Hotel in Brixen
Boutique Hotel Badhaus is a new design haven where history and modernity meet at the foot of the Dolomites.
Boutique Hotel Badhaus: A Contemporary Jewel in the Heart of Brixen
In Brixen, a small town with medieval charm nestled in the heart of South Tyrol, the Badhaus Boutique Hotel opens a new chapter of hospitality. Here, Gothic façades and cobbled alleys merge with the majestic silhouette of the Dolomites as a backdrop. The hotel rises in the heart of the historic center, where water has always shaped life: once public baths, today a confidential address where travelers and locals come together. Badhaus embraces this memory to offer an urban experience, elegant and deeply rooted in the region.
The very name of the hotel, “Badhaus,” draws from the history of this unique place. As early as the Middle Ages, it housed one of Brixen’s three public baths, offering treatments, bathing, and social gatherings. The activity lasted until the 1940s before the building fell into oblivion. With the support of the Viertel Group, the current hotel operator, the project of a contemporary hotel was launched in 2020, bringing together heritage authorities and architects with the same ambition: to revive a place of memory in a new form.
Designed by Bergmeisterwolf Architects, the project combines the architectural heritage of the baths with a contemporary strength and respect for history. Conceived as a permeable space, it reveals itself through several entrances, crisscrossed with perspectives and punctuated by two towers that emphasize verticality. The façades tell a story of materials: hand-molded clay bricks, copper inspired by old pipes, ribbed glass that filters light while preserving intimacy, and black steel in subtle contrast. The interiors, designed by the architects and crafted by a local carpenter, play with a refined vocabulary where every detail matters: ash floors painted pale green evoking water, silk-wrapped light fixtures, patinated copper taps and switches. Art is also an integral part of the project, with works by artist Michael Fliri, such as a liquid starry sky or a floating bathrobe sculpture, evoking the poetry of water and daily gestures.
Badhaus offers 21 rooms divided into five categories, each conceived as a contemporary cocoon. Stone, wood, and copper shape a soothing universe, while colors recall the culture of the baths. Bathrooms are adorned with green quartzite, with washbasins sculpted from a single block of stone on copper legs. Textiles, exclusively crafted in Italy, favor fine linen and cotton. Every detail reflects a simple yet profoundly luxurious aesthetic, where comfort merges with a hushed atmosphere.
The culinary experience comes to life at the Viertel Bar, open to the city and animated like an urban lounge. The Venetian terrazzo floor inlaid with Murano glass, Hans J. Wegner design chairs, and the sculptural counter set the scene for Brixen to gather over coffee, an aperitif, or a seasonal dish. The gastronomic journey promises to be a voyage through local flavors, sublimated by a contemporary approach echoing the hotel’s philosophy: blending authenticity and modernity.
The original spirit of the place – that of gathering – naturally extends into the courtyard and the Viertel Bar. A green terrace, nestled on the upper floors, offers views over the surrounding vineyards. There, above the rooftops of medieval houses, one can dream and let the mind wander. For a wellness break, guests enjoy exclusive packages at Acquarena, a vast bathing and wellness complex with saunas and rooftop relaxation areas, just 200 meters away. A bath bag with bathrobe, sauna towel, and slippers is included. As for services, the hotel also offers a design parking garage imagined by artist Harry Thaler, with reflective ceilings and a futuristic LED system, reminding guests that aesthetics permeate even the smallest details of the experience. Arriving here is already a unique experience in itself.
The Badhaus Boutique Hotel is not just a hotel: it is a rebirth. It breathes life into a forgotten place, celebrates water, matter, and art, and embodies contemporary elegance at the heart of a city once medieval and now rich with culture. More than a stay, it is an invitation to dive into history and be carried away by the energy of the surrounding hills and the Dolomites. And this, in every season.
