A secret garden
Hidden behind a low-profile façade in an old quarter of Palma, Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden opened its doors in 2019 and is home to inconspicuous luxury.
Built in the 16th century, the abandoned 2,500 sqm property underwent a four-year renovation from head to toe. The Mallorcan studio, Ohlab, created a serene space that evokes the building’s past. The project’s heart and soul is to invite you in and experience a large family home rather than a hotel. Can Bordoy has the largest private garden in the city, with 750 sqm landscaped with 70 different types of plant species. In the living room that acts as a lobby, vines wind along the walls and ceiling, giving the impression that the garden is no longer confined to the outside. The building’s cracks and signs of aging haven’t been concealed but instead enhanced, inspired by the Japanese tradition, Kintsugi. The eclectic decoration mixes classical style with contemporary touches; antique wood floors, hand-blown glassware, marble tiles, baroque mirrors, velvet curtains, period furniture, local ceramics, and works of art.
The hotel offers 24 different rooms with a romantic atmosphere and impeccable design. Ohlab designed custom-made furniture for Can Bordoy: beds, headboards with brass lamps and knobs, walnut wood velvet nightstands, bar furniture, desks and benches. Large velvet curtains hide sumptuous bathrooms creating a spectacular setting.
The garden-inspired Botànic restaurant offers organic and local cuisine created by chef Andrés Benítez. The hotel has a bar, library, swimming pool, a spa in the basement, and a panoramic rooftop with a glass-bottom pool that can be seen from the main staircase below.
Can Bordoy is an intimate botanical retreat that is ideal for discovering the city of Palma.
