EmiLu Design Hotel: A Design Inspired by the 1960s

EmiLu is not just another hotel, but a deeply personal project. The force behind the hotel is Michael Bräutigam, a Stuttgart-based real estate developer with more than thirty years of experience. He dreamed of bringing new life and individuality to the city center. The hotel’s name itself is a tribute to his wife Petra Luise and daughter Emilia, whose names intertwine to form EmiLu. Its story reflects a profound attachment to Stuttgart, a desire to add character to the city in addition to standard chain models, and a desire to preserve the city center. Michael Bräutigam envisioned EmiLu as both an architectural and cultural gesture: a hotel that tells a story of values, family, and hospitality.

After four years of construction, the former 1960s administrative building was transformed by Wolf Architekten and Blocher Partners (an award-winning studio known for its creativity). The mission was to preserve the spirit of the original building while anchoring it firmly in modernity. The façade is both understated and bold, while the interiors express the concept of Modern Classic, blending timeless 1960s elements with contemporary designer furniture and Bauhaus icons. Noble materials such as walnut hardwood floors, natural stone, marble, leather, and velvet create a refined and welcoming atmosphere. Every detail was meticulously curatedby Petra Luise Bräutigam, who shaped the hotel’s interior identity with unique sensitivity.

EmiLu offers 90 rooms and 11 suites, each one unique. Nothing is standardized here: every room is designed as a one-of-a-kind space, with atmospheres subtly shifting from floor to floor. Comfort is paramount, with high-quality bedding, a coffee machine, and a design-forward bathroom in every room. The color palette ranges from soft shades of beige, sand, and cream that soothe the spirit, to deeper accents of midnight blue, forest green, and burgundy that envelop the space in a cocoon of elegance. Rich materials add warmth and texture. designer pieces by Ligne Roset and Freifrau stand alongside vintage finds from auctions, giving each room its own singular character. Thick curtains gently filter the light, creating a cozy, cocoon-like ambiance. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto urban views, while suites on the upper floors boast private balconies. The Emi suites located on the top floor, feature intimate terraces perfect for watching the sunrise over Stuttgart or the city lights at night.

The culinary journey begins at breakfast with FRITZ where guests can partake in an elegant buffet complemented by an à la carte menu. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients set the tone for a convivial atmosphere, extended into the afternoon with an all-day breakfast concept highly popular among Stuttgart locals. On the ground floor, the stylish Gian Paolo e Marco (GPeM) bar and the upscale Best fashion boutique complete the hotel’s offering, turning it into a true lifestyle destination. For those preferring privacy, a partnership with a neighboring Italian restaurant makes it possible to savor Mediterranean dishes in the comfort of one’s room.

The true gem lies on the sixth floor: the Lennarts rooftop lounge, a light-filled space with a terrace offering exclusive panoramic views of Stuttgart.
