Gáldu Hotel & Spa: Hotel in Saariselkä, Finnish Lapland
A secluded hideaway beside Urho Kekkonen National Park
Located in Laanila, just minutes from Saariselkä, Gáldu Hotel & Spa enjoys a privileged setting surrounded by boreal forests, rolling fells, and pristine wilderness. Positioned at the gateway to Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of Europe’s largest protected natural areas, the hotel offers year-round access to Arctic adventures, from hiking beneath the midnight sun to chasing the Northern Lights during the winter months.
Created by the Mehtäjärvi family, Gáldu is an independent boutique hotel inspired by the traditions of Finnish Lapland. Its name comes from the Sámi word “Gáldu,” meaning “cold spring” or “ice bath,” a reference to the Nordic wellness ritual of alternating between the warmth of the sauna and the invigorating chill of cold water. Built using sustainably sourced timber, the hotel has been carefully designed to blend into its natural surroundings.
The architecture combines traditional Lapland building techniques with contemporary Scandinavian design. Dark timber façades merge seamlessly with the surrounding forest, while expansive floor-to-ceiling windows frame the changing Arctic landscape. Inside, clean lines, natural materials, and understated interiors create a warm, peaceful retreat where every season becomes part of the experience.
Gáldu Hotel & Spa features 31 rooms and suites, including 11 Forest Havens, 18 Stellar Havens, and 2 Signature Suites. Measuring approximately 269 square feet, the Forest Havens offer either a king bed or twin beds and open directly onto the surrounding woodland through expansive windows. Located on the upper floor, the Stellar Havens provide elevated views of the Arctic sky, allowing guests to admire the Northern Lights from bed during the winter season. The Signature Suites, each measuring approximately 538 square feet, offer generous living areas, nearly 43 feet of floor-to-ceiling glazing, whirlpool bathtubs for two, and, in one suite, a private balcony overlooking the forest. The interiors embody contemporary Scandinavian simplicity. Natural wood, wool textiles, soft gray tones, matte black accents, and custom-designed furnishings create an atmosphere that feels both refined and comforting. Spa-inspired bathrooms feature natural stone finishes and calming neutral palettes, while abundant daylight enhances the sense of connection with the surrounding wilderness.
Dining highlights the pure flavors of Finnish Lapland through a contemporary culinary approach. The restaurant showcases Arctic game, locally caught fish, wild berries, mushrooms, and seasonal ingredients sourced from the surrounding region. An elegant cocktail lounge complements the experience with signature drinks inspired by Nordic botanicals, while breakfast is freshly prepared to order using locally sourced products.
Wellness defines the heart of the Gáldu experience. The hotel is home to what is described as the world’s northernmost outdoor spa, featuring three saunas—including a traditional Finnish sauna and a wood-fired sauna—a steam room, a heated pool, an outdoor whirlpool, and an ice-cold plunge pool inspired by centuries-old Finnish traditions. Guests can also enjoy massages, yoga sessions, and sound healing experiences designed to reconnect body and mind with the rhythms of Arctic nature.
With just 31 rooms and suites, architecture rooted in the landscape, and an authentic approach to Nordic hospitality, Gáldu Hotel & Spa stands among Finnish Lapland’s most distinctive boutique retreats. A destination where silence, wellness, and the beauty of the Arctic become the ultimate luxury.
