Hôtel Lancaster Paris: A Private Family-Style Hotel Near the Champs-Élysées

Located at 7 rue de Berri in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, Hôtel Lancaster enjoys a prime location just moments from one of the world’s most iconic avenues, while maintaining a discreet, intimate atmosphere. Behind its elegant covered entrance—originally designed for carriages—the hotel reveals a calm, almost private ambiance. Away from the city’s hustle and bustle, the interior courtyard, a lush green oasis with a fountain and climbing plants, offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of the capital.

Hôtel Lancaster’s story begins with a private mansion built in 1889. In 1925, visionary hotelier Émile Wolf acquired the property and transformed it into a hotel by adding several floors. From its opening, the hotel became a favorite meeting place for international personalities, from royalty to cinema legends. Marlène Dietrich stayed here for several years, while names like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Lauren Bacall, and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton counted among its guests. True to Émile Wolf’s philosophy—“I never had clients, only friends”—the hotel still preserves this family-house spirit, where every stay feels personally meaningful.

Recently renovated under the direction of Studio Jean-Philippe Nuel, Hôtel Lancaster has evolved while respecting its heritage. The interior architecture blends eras gracefully: classical elements and period pieces sit alongside contemporary, clean-lined design. The fully redesigned lobby now centers around the CopperBay bar, becoming a lively social hub. Throughout the corridors and communal spaces, artworks, antique chandeliers, and noble materials create a warm, elegant atmosphere.

The hotel now offers 44 rooms and 11 suites, each designed as a unique living space. Lightened parquet floors, contemporary rugs, and 18th-century–inspired furnishings are paired with minimalist touches, creating a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity. Rooms are dressed in soft tones—yellow, pink, green, or gray—and punctuated with artworks, including pieces by Boris Pastoukhoff, contributing to the hotel’s artistic identity. Bathrooms, mostly in white marble, maintain a restrained 1930s style while meeting contemporary standards. Some suites bear the names of iconic figures linked to the hotel’s history, such as the Marlène Dietrich Suite or the Émile Wolf Suite, offering expansive, residential-style living spaces.

On the gastronomic front, Monsieur Lancaster continues the tradition of grand Parisian houses. Designed as an elegant dining room, it combines Art Deco touches, cozy banquettes, and large windows that let in natural light. Chef Sébastien Giroud offers seasonal menus inspired by French regional terroirs. This approach highlights fresh ingredients and authentic cooking while including classic favorites like French onion soup, croque-monsieur, and club sandwiches. In summer, the courtyard becomes a natural extension of the restaurant, offering an intimate, highly sought-after setting.

The CopperBay bar, located within the hotel, adds a contemporary dimension to the experience. Designed by a team renowned in the world of cocktails, it offers a creative, inspired approach, with a signature menu and a carefully crafted design featuring blue tones and copper accents. Under its 1930s–inspired glass canopy, the bar becomes an elegant evening meeting point.

The latest addition, Lancaster Private Spa, opened in September 2022, offers a wellness experience that goes beyond traditional standards. Located on the 8th floor under the rooftops, it boasts exceptional panoramic views of Paris, from the Sacré-Cœur to the Eiffel Tower. Fully privatizable, the spa is designed as an intimate cocoon, in keeping with the hotel’s spirit. It includes a jacuzzi, a hammam, two treatment tables, and an outdoor terrace. Treatments, developed in collaboration with Terre de Mars, also include specialized services for hands and expectant mothers.

Through its history, architecture, and unique atmosphere, Hôtel Lancaster embodies a distinct idea of Parisian luxury: discreet, lived-in, and profoundly human—a place not just to discover, but to return to.
