JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa : Un Sanctuaire Design au Cœur de la Méditerranée

Crete, the island of contrasts, reveals here its most majestic face. The JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa rises on the Akra Pelegrí peninsula, near the unspoiled coastal village of Marathi and just twenty minutes from Chania. Nestled across nearly 40 hectares of dramatic landscape, the property blends seamlessly with the rugged relief, opening onto sweeping views of Souda Bay. At every moment of the day, the light sculpts the scenery: in the morning, a diaphanous mist drifts across the hills; at dusk, the setting sun ignites the sea in shades of gold and copper. The atmosphere is that of a Mediterranean refuge where time slows down. The whisper of olive trees, the resinous scent of pines, and the cicadas’ song compose a natural symphony accompanying each walk between the buildings. More than a hotel, it feels like a breath, an invitation to surrender to the power of the Cretan landscape.

Inaugurated in 2025, the JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa marks a defining moment in the history of luxury hospitality. It is the very first JW Marriott property in Greece, and the brand’s debut seaside resort in the Mediterranean. Developed by the Vasilakis SA group, the project embodies a vision: to offer conscious luxury rooted in place, where the travel experience blends with cultural authenticity. Marriott International, already present in over 30 countries with its JW Marriott brand, envisioned Crete as a new beacon for travelers in search of refinement and renewal. The island, steeped in millennia of history, was the natural stage for such ambition. Here, everything is designed to reconnect guests with the essentials: the beauty of the landscape, the generosity of local flavors, and the sincerity of Greek hospitality.

The Athens-based studio Block722 orchestrated this ambitious project with impeccable mastery. Their philosophy is simple yet profound: to build in harmony with the site, celebrating local materials and respecting the natural rhythm of the land. Spanning nearly 60,000 square meters of built space, the resort unfolds like a mineral amphitheater cascading in terraces toward the sea. Geometric volumes are carefully aligned, punctuated by patios, pergolas, and green roofs. Every element enters into dialogue with its surroundings: stone quarried on site blends with concrete mixed with local aggregates, while the clean lines evoke both modernist rigor and the simplicity of vernacular Cretan dwellings. Light is treated as a design material in its own right. Delicate shadows are cast by trellises and columns inspired by ancient temples. Interiors cultivate a sense of warmth and intimacy: bespoke furniture, raw textures softened by natural textiles, a palette of earth tones enhanced by stone and wood. The result is a feeling of balance and serenity, as if every stone, plant, and opening belonged organically to the landscape.

With 160 rooms, suites, and villas, the five-star resort welcomes guests into sanctuaries that extend the architectural spirit of the project. Most accommodations are oriented toward the sea, promising unforgettable sunrises or sunsets from their terraces. Several villas boast private infinity pools suspended above the cliffs, creating the magical impression of floating between sky and sea. Inside, the décor embraces luxurious restraint: polished stone floors, whitewashed walls, pale wood joinery, and artisanal touches, washed linen, handwoven cottons, ceramics shaped by Cretan craftsmen. These are not spaces that seek to impress through opulence but to soothe through refinement. Each room is conceived as an intimate retreat, where every detail, from the woven rattan chairs to the terracotta lamps, tells a story of understated elegance.

Cuisine is central to the JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa experience. Six distinctive dining concepts unfold a palette of flavors rooted in terroir yet open to the world. ANÓEE, on the seafront, celebrates wood-fire cooking under Chef Manolis Papoutsakis, spotlighting seasonality and local produce. Õnalos showcases seafood, freshly caught in the bay, offering a true “sea-to-table” experience. Cuccagna, a reimagined Italian trattoria, marries transalpine classics with Mediterranean produce. Fayi, a Mediterranean restaurant, embodies the art of sharing with dishes inspired by Cretan and Greek traditions. Suncti, by the pool, offers light bites and refreshing cocktails. Eēxis, the lounge bar, invites chic evenings with sweeping sea views. The hotel’s JW Garden provides fresh herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers, ensuring unmatched freshness. Another highlight is the JW Market, the brand’s first in Europe, blending café, fine foods, and lifestyle retail, weaving a connection with local artisanship.

At the heart of the resort, the Anoseas Spa embodies a sanctuary of regeneration. Here, Cretan traditions meet modern wellness: olive-oil treatments, holistic massages inspired by ancestral rituals, hydrotherapy, and sunrise yoga. The space includes five treatment rooms, a spa suite for couples, and a beauty corner. Around it, infinity pools cascade in terraces, melting seamlessly into the Aegean Sea. An ultramodern fitness center and active wellness programs complement the offering, while bespoke retreats can be curated for travelers seeking transformative experiences.

Families are equally cared for: the Phestos Den kids’ club, created in partnership with Worldwide Kids, offers creative workshops, ecological education, and even a mini-garden where children can learn through nature. For explorers, the concierge arranges cultural excursions, private cruises, and wine tastings in Crete’s vineyards.

The JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa is more than a hotel. It is a complete Mediterranean experience, where contemporary architecture embraces raw nature, where gastronomy reinterprets tradition, and where wellness rises to the level of art de vivre. Between rock and sea, between heritage and modernity, it embodies a destination that transcends travel to become a return to the essentials. Here, Crete reveals itself in all its truth: radiant, generous, timeless. And as guests leave the resort, they carry with them more than memories, a luminous imprint, an invitation to return.
