Mamula Island: Hotel in Kotor Bay
Perched in the heart of the azure waters of the Bay of Kotor, Mamula Island is an ode to Mediterranean living, an exclusive address where history meets contemporary luxury.
Mamula Island by Banyan Tree: Awakening the Senses on a Private Montenegrin Island
Mamula Island is located at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor, one of the Adriatic’s best-preserved gems. Just a few minutes by boat from Herceg Novi, this circular island seems to float between sky and sea, sheltered by the rugged mountains of Montenegro. Surrounded by crystalline waters and bathed in golden sunset light, it offers an almost mystical atmosphere, suspended in time. The silence is majestic, punctuated only by the gentle lapping of waves and the whisper of the sea breeze.
Built in the 19th century by Austro-Hungarian General Lazar Mamula, the fortress once served as a strategic defense point guarding the bay’s entrance. After decades of slumber, the island has undergone a spectacular transformation thanks to Orascom Development Holding and the vision of billionaire Samih Sawiris. In 2023, it reopened as Mamula Island by Banyan Tree, the group’s first hotel in Europe. The challenge: to revive this historically rich site while honoring its identity. The result? A remarkable architectural rebirth, blending heritage conservation with bold contemporary design.
The interior design and bespoke furnishings were entrusted to the Berlin-based studio weStudio, led by architect and designer Piotr Wiśniewski. Each space offers a sensory immersion: walls crafted from local Cevsky stone, solid oak woodwork, aged brass details, organic textiles, and carefully curated artworks. The atmosphere is minimalist yet warm, with a raw aesthetic that subtly dialogues with natural elements. Light, ever-present, caresses the stone vaults and creates refined plays of shadow.
The hotel offers 32 rooms and suites, nestled within restored former casemates and the fortress towers. Some feature private terraces overlooking the Adriatic, others open onto interior gardens or centuries-old walls. A special mention goes to the Sky Suites perched atop the towers, offering 360-degree panoramas of the sea and mountains. Every room is conceived as a sensory refuge: washed linen bedding, sculptural furniture, stone bathrooms, and absolute silence.
Mamula Island’s main dining venue showcases Montenegrin cuisine reimagined through a Mediterranean lens: freshly caught morning fish, organic vegetables from local farms, wild herbs, and coastal olive oil. Three restaurants and four bars punctuate the island, offering Sunday barbecues, candlelit dinners, and botanical cocktails at the rooftop bar. Here, every meal becomes a ritual, a celebration of sea and land.
Within the fortress walls, the Mamula by Banyan Tree spa unfolds over 748 square meters of wellness space. Vaulted treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, a hammam inspired by local traditions, flotation baths, sensory showers, and an infinity pool make this a sanctuary of total relaxation. Treatments draw on ancestral Adriatic rituals, using medicinal plants, natural clays, and Asian techniques. A private beach, open-air yoga studio, and fitness center complete the offering for holistic mind-body rejuvenation.
Mamula Island is not just a hotel; it is a full, immersive, emotional, and spiritual experience. Visitors come to isolate themselves from the world, reconnect with what matters, and savor a rare form of luxury: silence, nature, architecture, and rediscovered time. Between sky, sea, and stone, the island becomes the stage for an unforgettable escape.
