A restored palace in Salento

Amid the maze of cobbled streets in Matino, an 18th-century gem has been transformed into an intimate and refined retreat: Palais Gentile. This guesthouse offers a unique experience, blending historical charm with modern comfort—perfect for travelers seeking authenticity and serenity.

Located in the historic center of Matino, a picturesque village in Salento, Palais Gentile enjoys a prime location. Just 15 minutes west, the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea lap against white sandy beaches. To the north, 25 minutes away, lies the cultural city of Galatina, and a little further, the vibrant Lecce, often called the “Florence of the South.”

Originally from Italy and France, owners Carolina and Aurélien traveled across Europe before settling in Salento. Initially designed as a family home, Palais Gentile has since become a guesthouse open to all who share their values of authenticity and hospitality. The year-long renovation preserved the original materials and relied on local artisans to maintain the soul of the place.

The Palais offers five elegant and bright rooms with whitewashed walls: two Deluxe rooms and three suites. Each space combines traditional Puglian architecture, authentic arches, and local artwork. The spacious suites include a double bedroom and a living room with a sofa bed, making them ideal for families. The limestone bathrooms feature walk-in showers and Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries. The interior design is a sophisticated blend of elegant vintage touches and regional craftsmanship. Original patterned tile floors, stone arches, and high ceilings create an atmosphere that is both chic and authentic.

The jewel of Palais Gentile is undoubtedly its panoramic rooftop. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a breakfast of local products or to sip a glass of Salento wine at sunset, accompanied by lounge music. The breathtaking views of Matino’s historic village add a magical touch to every moment spent on the terrace.

While Palais Gentile does not have an on-site restaurant, Foscolo, located just a few steps away, offers refined Italian cuisine and a selection of cocktails to enjoy with a view of the historic center. The owners can also arrange various activities to enhance your stay, such as cooking classes, sailing excursions, or vintage car rentals to explore the region.

Palais Gentile is more than just a guesthouse; it is an invitation to discover authentic Salento, to slow down, and to savor the simple pleasures of Italian life.
