In southern Portugal, in the Algarve region, east of the town of Tavira, stands Pensão Agrícola, a countryside guesthouse.

Originally it was a farmhouse built in 1920, surrounded by olive groves, fig trees, almond trees and strawberry trees, and left abandoned since 1970. Its new owners, Rui Liberato de Sousa and Nuno Ramos, called upon the architectural firm Atelier Rua to assist them in rehabilitating the place. The traditional Portuguese architecture has been preserved by adding a contemporary touch. The main house’s architecture has been preserved as it was.

Pensão Agrícola consists of 6 minimalist rooms, each with its own personality. 3 of the rooms are located in the original farmhouse and 3 others are located in new contemporary units and all of them have a private patio. The rooms are designed with whitewashed walls typical of the area, smooth concrete floors, and traditional white-painted reed ceilings. They are decorated in light tones, with white cotton bed linens covered with handcrafted woolen plaids, vintage furniture, retro fixtures, and design objects. The all-around mood is rustic and at the same time contemporary, in an eclectic mix that totally works together. The bathrooms are equipped with rain showers and organic olive oil soaps.

Breakfast is simple yet excellent, made with fresh, local products. Pensão Agrícola provides several areas to relax; including the living room with its fireplace and library, and the shaded terrace. There is a heated swimming pool with comfortable sunbeds. A Vespa and a Spider are available for rent to explore the surroundings.
