The Companion Vienna: Hotel in Vienna, Austria

Behind a quiet façade on Mariahilfer Straße lies another idea of Viennese hospitality. Here, imperial classicism gives way to something freer, redder, more alive. The Companion Vienna isn't a hotel you pass through: it's an address you inhabit.

The Companion Vienna: Timeless design and vibrant gastronomy in the heart of Vienna

Between the station and the boulevard, the pulse of the 15th district

Set at Mariahilfer Straße 127a, one of Europe’s busiest shopping avenues, The Companion Vienna occupies a strategic spot just steps from Westbahnhof station. The neighborhood, lively and cosmopolitan, blends independent boutiques, local markets, and cafés that never quite fall asleep. From the first step outside, you feel the rhythm of a less formal Vienna, closer to its residents than to its palaces. Cross the threshold, though, and the avenue’s bustle fades: the street gives way to a chromatic cocoon where deep red and brushed brass compose a hushed interlude, just minutes from the historic center and its museums.

A friendship that grew into a hotel collection

It all began in 2008, when three friends, Michi, Flo, and Christian, set out to imagine a different way of welcoming guests in Vienna: less formal, more sincere, designed the way one would host friends at home. From that idea came a small collection of addresses built on a single philosophy, that of the “companion,” the attentive travel companion who never intrudes. In 2017, hotelier Kai Hollmann joined the venture, bringing his experience and his vision of hospitality with character. An agreement signed in December 2023 further cemented the partnership and opened a new chapter for the brand, without ever betraying its founding spirit: a stay lived as a friendship rather than a transaction.

An architectural dialogue by Piotr Wiśniewski

The visual identity of The Companion Vienna owes much to the work of Piotr Wiśniewski and his studio weStudio, who drew directly on the legacy of the Wiener Werkstätte, the early-20th-century movement of Viennese artists and craftspeople that laid the groundwork for a total way of living, balancing function and ornament. The result is a resolutely contemporary vocabulary: arcades painted in shades of red, brushed brass, deep velvet, and mirrored plays that stretch every perspective. Every hallway, every landing becomes a moment of staging, as if the architecture itself were telling a story.

A hundred and thirty-eight rooms, seven ways to live in Vienna

The hotel counts one hundred and thirty-eight rooms, spread across seven evocatively named worlds: Solo, Nest, Poet, Muse, Balcony, Roomies, and the striking Velvet Suite. Each interprets the hotel’s signature aesthetic with its own freedom, through deep colors, salvaged woodwork, and graphic touches inspired by artistic Vienna. The Poet rooms, with their midnight-blue ceilings, offer a literary, hushed atmosphere; the Roomies, designed for groups of friends, reinvent the idea of sharing space; the Velvet Suite unfolds like a small apartment where one could easily linger. A common thread runs through them all: an attention to detail, from the linens to the light, that turns every room into a personal refuge.

Boca and Calypso, two addresses within the address

On the ground floor, restaurant Boca serves generous Mediterranean-inspired fare in a setting dominated by deep red tones, potted palms, and a sunlit inner courtyard. The space works like a suspended village square, where guests linger on the terrace in the shade of trimmed trees. As evening falls, bar Calypso takes over with a carefully crafted cocktail list and a more intimate mood, designed to extend the evening for travelers and locals alike. Both addresses share the same aesthetic signature: relaxed hedonism, far from the formality of grand dining rooms.

Thoughtful touches that feel like second nature

The Companion Vienna leans into hospitality without pretense: personalized welcomes, communal spaces designed for connection rather than mere passage, and constant attention to the traveler’s everyday comfort. Boca’s inner courtyard serves as a breathing space at any hour, while the lobby lounges, furnished with vintage pieces and deep sofas, invite guests to linger with a book or a conversation. It’s these small gestures, more than any spectacular amenity, that turn every stay into a tailored experience.

A stopover for those who love Vienna differently

The Companion Vienna tells the story of a Vienna freed from its imperial clichés, warmer and more familiar. It’s an address for curious travelers, those who prefer a companion on the road to a tourist guide. Here, every stay unfolds like a friendship just beginning.
