Alemanys 5 consists of two apartments for rent, located In the medieval city of Girona, one hour north of Barcelona, Catalonia.
The ruined historic building from the 16th century has been carefully restored over 10 years by the Barcelona–based architect Anna Noguera from the city of Girona. The existing exposed stone walls have been retained while new sleek and modern materials have been added including steel, concrete, and oak, creating a wonderful contrast between the old rustic and the contemporary. Completed in 2010, the 4-storey building has been reconfigured to offer two distinct units named El Badiu (The Veranda) and El Jardi (The Garden). On the ground floor, there is the garage and the bike storage room.
The 100 m2 El Jardi apartment, the smaller of the two apartments, is located on the 1st floor and includes an open-plan living and dining area, a slender, slate-gray kitchen that’s hidden behind a screen. Across the hallway from this communal zone are two double bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower. This apartment connects to a garden with a dining area, to a wisteria-shaded courtyard, and to a black concrete swimming pool crafted from an old cistern that was found on the site, framed by high stone walls.
A staircase and elevator lead up to the second 180 m2 duplex apartment, El Badiu, which is located on the upper levels of the building. This apartment has a spacious light-filled living room with a double-sided fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen, a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom with a concrete bathtub and shower, two children’s bedrooms with pullout storage and with en-suite shower rooms, and a spacious wooden veranda facing south with an exclusive view of the city. The minimalist interiors give off a warm and comforting atmosphere.
The house, with a total of 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, can be divided into two individual apartments or rented as an entire for 10 people. Alemanys 5 is a gem of design and architecture.
