A contemporary retreat

Kyle Scot is a house for rent located in the county of Sutherland, in the Highlands region of North Scotland.

The cottage overlooks shallow Kyle of Tongue loch, which gives it its name. Kyle Scot is part of preservation and hospitality organisation Wildland, which has restored several historic properties in Scotland. The transformation of the century-old, ruined and abandoned stone house has been undertaken by Edinburgh-based design studio Gras, headed by architect Gunnar Groves-Raines.

Completed in 2019, Kyle Scot is a contemporary retreat for two, combining traditional Scottish architecture with modern interior design. The structure of the house has been preserved and consolidated with new stones, lime renders, lead and slate, while the interiors have been totally stripped down. Interior designer Ruth Kramer was enlisted to give Kyle House’s rooms a Nordic twist. These ones are limited to a simple material palette of stone, timber, metal, and glass. The interconnected rooms are designed as boxes, clad in with oak from Danish Dinesen HeartOak. Part of the floors are coated with locally mined caithness black stone. The house with a surface area of 70 sqm on two levels consists of a living space with a lounge and its open fireplace, a fitted wooden kitchen, and a dining area on the ground floor. A wooden staircase leads upstairs where there is a bedroom and a generous bespoke bathroom by Garde Hvalsøe with a rain shower and a bathtub with views of Ben Loyal. The decor is as simple as it is sophisticated, in shades of grey, with Carefully curated furnishings combining Scottish craftsmanship and Scandinavian design classics. Many openings bring natural light inside and frame a panoramic view of the picturesque, wild and hilly landscape.
