A haven in the centre of the city
For rent since 2017, The Porteous’ Studio apartment is tucked away in the Old Town of Edinburgh, in a historic cobbled lane, just minutes from the bustling Grassmarket Square and the famous Edinburgh Castle.
Porteous’ Studio was designed by the young couple Eilidh Izat and Jack Arundell who form the Izat Arundell design firm, exploring the fields of architecture, craft and food. In the past, the rustic stone building housed a blacksmith’s workshop and more recently a garage.
The open-plan apartment, with a surface area of 36 sqm, for two people, includes a living room with sofa, an open equipped kitchen with a dining area, a bedroom with double bed separated by a sliding wooden screen, a shower room, as well as a handful of amenities including hand and body skincare. The space is calming, warm and tactile, in a minimalist style with accessories kept to a bare minimum. Designed by local artisans and whith natural materials, the interiors feature bespoke furniture and wooden window frames made from the wood of a single oak tree by the local cabinetmaker Namon Gaston, vertical slatted wood screens and kitchen by Richard Anstice from 56 North Kitchens, walls finished with clay plaster from Clayworks, tableware made by ceramicist Rebecca Proctor, and a custom upholstered sofa with Swedish wool Svenson by Peter Holmes of Beseated. On the floor, gray velvet limestone tiles echo the cobbled street right outside. The enlarged main opening as well as a new window cast a soft, northern light across the apartment. Underfloor heating keeps the studio cosy at all times. On arrival guests receive a breakfast basket of fresh, local produce containing bread from the Twelve Triangles bakery, eggs, seasonal jam, locally roasted coffee and teas, and milk.
