Forestis Dolomites: The Ultimate Alpine Retreat Where Nature and Design Unite

Overlooking Bressanone, Forestis Dolomites, a member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection, unfolds within a dense forest on the slopes of Mount Plose, offering breathtaking views of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Far from mass tourism, this sanctuary for escape combines the pure mountain air, the song of the forests, and sunlight, creating an atmosphere conducive to relaxation and regeneration. The site borders the Puez-Odle Nature Park, enhancing the sense of being in total harmony with nature.

The story of Forestis dates back to 1912, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire wanted to create a sanatorium in the heart of South Tyrol, attracted by the purity of the Plose springs, the excellent climate, and the region’s exceptional sunshine. Otto Wagner, a leading architect of the time, was commissioned for the project, which never came to fruition due to the upheavals of World War I. A structure of wood and natural stone was then used by the clergy until the 1950s. In 2000, Alois Hinterreger discovered this unique place and acquired it with his family, opening a hotel in 2010. A decade later, his son Stefan, in tandem with Teresa Unterthiner, created the Forestis as we know it today: a five-star refuge celebrating nature, luxury, and human experience.

Designed by South Tyrolean architect Armin Sader, Forestis Dolomites combines modernity with respect for tradition. Three sculptural wooden towers, evoking tree trunks, rise beside the historic building, while every intervention prioritizes local natural materials: dolomitic stone, untreated spruce wood, and glass to maximize light and views of the Dolomites. Inside, the decoration pays tribute to the four elements — water, air, sun, and mild climate — with authentic and sensory materials: dolomite, aromatic wood, natural Trentino fabrics, and subtle lighting designed by Viabizzuno. Each suite and penthouse becomes a continuation of the surrounding forest, where minimalist furniture and natural tones encourage relaxation.

Forestis offers 62 rooms and suites, all south-facing to capture daylight and the majesty of the Dolomites. The 20 suites in the historic building are approximately 50 m², with a king-size bed, dressing room, lounge, and bathroom with rain shower using pure Plose spring water. Each suite has a terrace for enjoying alpine panoramas. The 40 Tower Suites, measuring 55 m² and located in the three towers, feature panoramic windows, traditional tiled stoves, spruce wood furniture, and terraces with loungers. Some guests can even spend the night under the stars in summer. The penthouse suites, 200 m² over two levels, include a private pool, a sauna with a view, spacious terraces, and an open fireplace, offering an unprecedented experience of luxury and intimacy at the summit of the Dolomites.

The Forestis Restaurant, arranged in terraces beneath the historic building, offers panoramic views of the Dolomites from every table, with an open terrace in summer. Breakfast and à la carte dinners celebrate local products, while the bar and lounge create a cozy atmosphere around fireplaces, ideal for an aperitif or a digestif. Led by Chef Roland Lamprecht, the cuisine blends Mediterranean inspiration with Alpine ingredients: herbs, berries, mushrooms, and produce from local farmers are transformed into fresh, creative, and flavorful dishes. Cocktails and mocktails at the bar are also enriched with essences from the surrounding forest, offering guests a unique culinary experience, perfectly in harmony with the panorama of the Dolomites, especially at sunset.

The Forestis Spa, covering 2,000 m² beneath the towers, offers a complete relaxation experience with views of the Dolomites. Indoor and outdoor pools connected together, Finnish, bio, and textile saunas, the Silent Room, and a tea lounge provide a full regeneration circuit. Treatments follow the Circle of Trees concept, inspired by Celtic traditions and local essences such as pine, spruce, larch, and stone pine, combining sound frequencies, stones, and wood to release tension. The Wyda area, the European version of Celtic yoga, completes this retreat by combining movement, meditation, and breathing in direct contact with the surrounding nature.

Forestis Dolomites is not just a hotel: it is a sensory experience where luxury, nature, and serenity meet at every moment. Between majestic panoramas, a restorative spa, and refined cuisine, the place offers a timeless escape, an invitation to contemplation and wonder at the summit of the Dolomites.
